Preparing your skin for summer

October 22, 2024

With warmer days and nights on the horizon, here’s how to seamlessly shift your skin into summer-mode.

Forewarned is forearmed and knowing what to expect of your skin as the mercury rises is key to keeping it feeling healthy, nourished and supported. While winter skincare tends to be about layers, summer months call for a more stripped back approach – prioritising the steps that will keep your skin dewy, hydrated and protected from the sun.

Whether it’s the humidity, surging heat or hours spent in the pool, our skin goes through a lot during summer. That’s why it’s important to focus concentrated, lightweight products that do the job without weighing you down or leaving your face looking wet. Not only can this create an effortless result that requires much less layering of products, you’ll be able to establish a go-to regimen that’s simple to use whether you’re at home or away on holidays.

Keep up the cleanser

Forget the days of stripping your skin of all its natural oils – it’s time to focus on gentle and kinder cleansers that use hydrating ingredients. In summer we tend to sweat more, so our cleanser needs to cut through the extra oil, dirt and grime without completely stripping your face (which can create even more oil).

Rely on retinol

If you’ve never tried retinol before, Summer is a great time to finally give it a go. Why? Because there’s less chance your skin will start to flake (as it gets used to the new ingredients). Potent and powerful – retinol packs a punch because it works on a cellular level, encouraging regular turnover of skin cells. This can help treat superficial acne scars, smooth the texture of your skin, soften fine lines and even reverse sun damage in some instances. Just remember above all else – using retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun so be sure to apply sunscreen everyday.

Here comes the sun

While we love long and relaxing days spent at the beach – the sad truth is that sun exposure is one of the biggest causes of visible aging. With this in mind, now’s the time to look at the sunscreen you’re already using and reassess whether it’s the right option as the warmer months get closer.

While your sunscreen may have worked for your skin during winter, is it appropriate for summer? Try to find an option that protects your skin from UV rays while regulating oil production and soothing inflammation. Zinc does this really well. It’s also great to use when traveling and flying, as it creates a block between your skin and the bacteria circulating within the air in cabin.

Boost your Vitamin C

Now that you’ve got your SPF sorted, it’s time to combine your sunscreen with the brightening power of Vitamin C. The two work beautifully together as Vitamin C supports the role of SPF through neutralising the free radicals that can cause photodamage. At the same time, your sunscreen can also protect you from emerging dark spots. Be mindful however of exposing your Vitamin C products to the elements. Both light and air can leave them less effective.

Find the perfect moisturiser

When it’s humid and you’re melting at your desk, the last thing you might want to do is slap on a heavy moisturiser, but moisturising during summer is still super important. Why? Even if your skin isn’t necessarily dry, it might be dehydrated.

This is your reminder to find a moisturiser that’s hydrating without being too rich, or alternatively, consider trading in your cream for a moisture-boosting serum instead. This will leave your skin feeling healthy and nourished while still light and free of product.
