Winter-proof your skin

July 19, 2024

Whether you have oily, dry, sensitive or combination skin – looking after it as winter takes full effect is essential. As the outside temperature drops and we turn the heaters up, our skin can become dry, dull and dehydrated. To better nourish and protect your skin during these cooler months, here’s our helpful guide to using gentle skincare that’s tailored to your needs.

While it can be tempting to stick to the same skincare routine all year round, adapting your regime to better suit the dip in temperature will leave your skin supported during winter, and in its best shape for the coming summer months. Importantly, it helps to ensure your skin is hydrated enough to withstand the elements – from chill to wind, rain, and even ice. So, how can we protect and nourish our skin under such challenging conditions? It all starts with embracing the products that reflect the age and needs of your skin and focusing on protecting your skin barrier. In doing so, you’ll be able to optimise how your skin looks and feels with a few simple yet consistent steps.

Starting Strong

As the mercury drops, so does our skin’s ability to protect itself. From low humidity that can exacerbate dryness, eczema and psoriasis to a lack of water in the epidermis, which can leave your skin feeling flaky and irritated – there are plenty of frustrating issues to deal with. To combat these concerns, always start by applying products to damp skin for better absorption. Our skin is a barrier after all. Thankfully, this doesn’t mean you have to have a shower every time you’re ready to kick-off your skincare routine – instead you might opt for a hydrating mist or toner, which can be applied day or night. When it is time for a shower however, try to keep the water temperature on the cooler side as hot water will dehydrate your skin.

Exfoliate with care

Although a heavy moisturiser might sound like a good idea for now, consider opting for low- impact products that focus on big outcomes. This means products that are gentle but still nourish your cells by specifically targeting certain areas and issues. Start with a chemical exfoliant such as a lactic acid-based exfoliant, which is gentle enough that it can be used multiple times a week – even if you have sensitive skin. Not only will this cleanse dead skin cells, it will reveal a brighter complexion, help to minimise fine lines, and leave you with a smooth and polished appearance. Try to exfoliate a number of times throughout the week and follow this with moisturiser each day to lock in that hydrating goodness. This is especially important if you’re working indoors with a heater on full blast. If you can find a moisturiser with hyaluronic acid – even better. This will help the skin retain moisture and enable your skin barrier to function better. If you’d prefer to swap out your moisturiser for a face oil, don’t forget you can always mix the two for a supercharged outcome. Lastly – even if the sun isn’t as harsh as it is in summer, it’s still always important to apply your sunscreen each day. Try to continue incorporating this into your routine during the cooler months.

Don’t forget the hyaluronic acid

Dose your skin with hydration by investing in an accessible but effective hyaluronic acid.
Simple formulations can still do the trick, with many specifically created for sensitive, dry
skin. This will provide your skin with a sense of plumpness and will help you fight those
every day winter battles against wind, low temps, and central heating. Importantly, be sure to

complete this step towards the end of your routine. Hyaluronic acid isn’t necessarily a
hydrating product – it’s more like a moisture magnet – so you want to give it a strong base of
moisture to work from. If, however, you’re using this type of product on its own, just be sure
to apply it to very damp skin.

Mask Up

While not necessarily for everyday use, finding a rich antioxidant-rich treatment mask to use
every other day or weekend can deliver a deep level of moisturisation to your face and
restore the skin barrier back to its best state. The right mask may even help to brighten and
tighten your skin during the dark and dull days of winter by better protecting the skin barrier.

Embrace an inner and outer glow

Another option you might want to consider is introducing LED light therapy into your routine.
Not only is red light therapy designed to hydrate the skin, it also assists in the production of
collagen and elastin by stimulating fibroblasts cells. This can leave your skin with a much-
needed boost during the cooler months and help with any anti-ageing efforts. The Trudermal
Glow face mask allows you to treat your skin at home with non-invasive techniques that
rejuvenate the skin all year round. Setting your mask to ‘cell rejuvenation’ mode is
especially helpful if you suffer from psoriasis, rosacea, acne or other inflammatory skin
conditions.
